This appears to be a real fix. I could continue to use this configuration not upgrading the kernel but I needed to upgrade. Also as a curiosity I tried disconnecting the router that is working as the internet gateway from the switch to see if that would change the results below and it didn't have any effect.

Also oddly enough I am trying to get this working for my wife who is completely new to Linux linhx wants to dive into programming and feels it makes more sense to do it on an open source platform.
